Indians tend to have a great deal of obsession with fair skin. The strange fact is, when they go abroad they will join hands with movements who work towards racial equality and eradicating racial violence. But in the homeland, some sort of magical Indian aura is making people superior over the dark complex people. They start shaming the dark-skinned people just to get some fake happiness out of it.
These layers of race and caste are the biggest misfortunes that are holding us from progressing towards a future that treats people equally. Here, no one wants to eradicate caste or racial abuse just to make sure there will be some below us at any level in the caste structure or social structure which makes them superior that is of no use.
Many studies suggest that almost 60% of the women in the country were mocked and body shamed at various occasions. 32.5% of women reported that their friends or neighbours often tend to make negative comments about the way they look, be it in terms of their body weight, body shape, skin tone, hair, body posture etc.
As IPL is going on in the United Arab Emirates because of the unavoidable COVID scare here in India, for the past ten days people are enjoying some sports in the form of entertainment. Thanks to Star Group for providing us with entertainment in regional languages as well.
I had a chance to watch the cricket in my language which is Tamil. The commentators were some cricketers from Tamilnadu state who will be accompanied by RJ Balaji most of the time. It's nice to listen to the sudden satire by Balaji when someone takes a wicket or hits the ball out of the stadium.
But along with entertainment, there comes the problem as well.
While watching cricket, most of us will forget to note the minor issues that are happening as part of the satires made by the commentators which entertain us. On a lighter note, that's not at all called entertainment.
The commentators from a cricketing background maintain their dignity most of the time but breaking the line at some point. But the guy who had been asked to do commentatory just for entertaining people is quite annoying quite often.
He is calling the cricketers with unwanted names which he often claims as pet names or nicknames which is acceptable to some extent. But what if he shames a player on his colour/race? Sometimes, shaming the body of the players is also streaming on air without any hesitations.
Recently, he shamed the player(Kieron Pollard from the Caribbean Origin) for his body size and colour. He started giving comments like, ' Where will he buy rice to get this big?', 'If he gives a pose for passport size photograph, only his nose will be visible', and he added that he can't invite pollard to his house for lunch indirectly mocking his eating habits.
The mistake here is, we the people who are listening to some infuriating comments don't even tend to think that it was a mistake that can happen to anyone. We are smiling for a while which indirectly supports such racist remarks.
This need to be stopped. Our human community becomes civilized after learning things and correcting them and it's a continuous process where we can evolve as a better individual. These racist remarks on others is also an issue that needs to be debated from ground level.
Racism is a crime. And it shouldn't be accepted at any level as part of the entertainment.
